Mandatory Practicum

The practicum portion of TESOL Advanced runs concurrently with the in-class portion of the program. Students spend Wednesdays (and the final Thursday) observing and teaching in the ESL classes at our partner schools. In this way students get to see real word examples of what they are learning from the very start. These early concrete examples help students as they plan the 10 hours of lessons they need to deliver in the 3rd and 4th weeks of the program.

The practicum portion of the course is demanding and true to reality as students must balance their in-class work with their practicum lesson preparation all within a very limited time frame.

The TESOL Advanced practicum consists of a minimum 20 hours broken down into the following:

  • 10 observation hours: observe and assist the sponsor teacher in the ESL classroom and complete observation tasks.
  • 10 supervised teaching hours: instruct in an adult ESL classroom, observed and graded by their sponsor teacher.
