Program Introduction

As EFL / ESL education develops, teachers are often expected to have a sound knowledge of methodology, a toolkit of techniques, and an understanding of classroom management. TESOL Advanced Online prepares and trains aspiring teachers for the classroom and offers a comprehensive professional development opportunity for experienced educators. While participating in the program, candidates consolidate their knowledge of the English language, get acquainted with the principles of effective teaching and obtain an array of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners. Graduates of this program will find that they are able to make the transition into the private or public EFL / ESL classroom with ease and confidence.

Admission Requirements:

International Students must pass the Vancouver International College – Career Campus Entrance Interview AND provide one of the following:

  • A recognized international English language equivalency test score, OR
  • A pass on our entrance exam, OR
  • Show proof of one: TOEFL® iBT 79-80, TOEIC 850, or IELTS 6.5

  • 110 Curriculum Hours
  • 20 Practicum hours
  • Must be completed in 6 months

Graduation Requirement: 70% average upon successful completion of both online and practicum components.

Mandatory Practicum

For TESOL Advanced Online students the practicum portion of the program is an absolutely crucial component. In the practicum all the formerly theoretical knowledge that is developed in the 110 hours of online work is put to the test in the practicum component. Over the 20 hours of practicum all the new knowledge is put into practice as students demonstrate their capability in facilitating classes in all the key skills and systems of language learning.

The TESOL Advanced Online practicum consists of a minimum 20 hours broken down into the following:
  • 10 observation hours: observe and assist the sponsor teacher in the ESL classroom and complete observation tasks
  • 10 supervised teaching hours: instruct in an adult ESL classroom, observed and graded by their sponsor teacher
Practicums can be completed anywhere in the world as long as minimum requirements are met:
  • The sponsor teachers must be qualified at a minimum of Equivalent of TESL Canada Professional Certificate Standard One, Two, or Three (Permanent) or CELTA
  • At least 2,000 hours of experience in an adult ESL/EFL classroom
Approved practicums must be in a classroom with:
  • A minimum of 80% of students aged 18 years of age or older
  • A minimum of 5 registered students in an ongoing ESL program
